Preservation
The new owners, Sharon and Derrick Spell are developing plans to restore, preserve, and maintain the Caire’s Landing buildings, antiques and properties. The plans are a tribute to the impact of the Caire family’s influence in the community along the Great River Road and the role the stores have in local history. The property was recently purchased from a family member of Sharon’s after the passing of her Great-Uncle Dr. Warren Caire.

This restoration is particularly important following extensive catastrophic damage to the older brick store during Hurricane Ida in 2021. The roof was blown off of the building, in sections, causing damage to the family home next door, and leaving scraps of roof and store debris and contents - including original slate tiles and civil-war-era spike nails, as well as original store documents - strewn about the area. The contents of the building, which are a mix of original, antique store items of historic importance, current fixtures and items in its last days functioning, have since been under attack by the elements.

The Spells are hopeful to work with the Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, as a part of the Historic District that includes Edgard, to restore and preserve these buildings for future education and information for the local community as well as travelers to the area.
